Grilled Gruyere Cheese, Ham, and Caramelized Onion Sandwich

This is a most delicious sandwich!  The crunchiness of the bread, the nuttiness of the Gruyere, the saltiness of the ham, and the sweetness of the caramelized onions taste amazing together!  I wasn't super happy with the outcome of my photo, it doesn't look very appealing, but it didn't matter once I started to eat it!  I am also very fond of Gruyere cheese, so the first slice I cut was way too thick for this sandwich!  I was OK with that!  If you really want to make sure you have a "melty" cheese sandwich, cut your slices more thin!

Ingredients (pepper and sugar not pictured):

Grilled Gruyere, Ham, and Caramelized Onion Sandwich
Makes 1 sandwich

2 slices of multi-grain bread
1/2 medium white onion, thinly sliced
3-4 tablespoons margarine
4 slices deli ham
2 slices Gruyere cheese
Pepper.
1 teaspoon sugar

To make the caramelized onions, add the thinly sliced onions, pepper, sugar, and 2 tablespoons margarine to a saute pan.

Cook down, stirring occasionally until reduced down, brown, and caramelized.  The below picture shows how far along I carmelized my onion - you can continue to cook until the onions are more brown if you would like.

To make the sandwich, preheat the grill.  Spread a thin layer of margarine on one side of each slice of bread, don't use too much, you don't want it to be soggy.  Build your sandwich on the grill, first slice of bread, margarine side down, then add a slice of cheese, then the ham, then the other slice of cheese, then the caramelized onions, top with other slice of bread - margarine side up.

Close the grill and let cook for 5-7 minutes.  Turn the sandwich - the top should now be browned and crispy and your cheese starting to melt.  Close the grill again and cook for another 5 minutes or until cooked to your happiness!

Take the sandwich off of the grill, let sit for a few minutes before cutting in half.
